As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves breathing extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Levels

Several parts of the city registered an AQI over 500, which represents 10x the healthy level established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times higher than acceptable standards.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

Since 2020, the government had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that blankets the capital as the cold season approaches.

Yet recently, the current local leadership petitioned the supreme court to request a modification of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only about 30% lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Court Decision and Enforcement

To the disappointment of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities approved the appeal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated hours throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was considerable flouting of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital showed pollution spiking around the night hours to some of the worst readings observed during the festival in at least recent memory.

Regional Implications

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on pollutants coming from India following the festivities.

Chronic Environmental Problem

Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a significant challenge for more than 15 years, with the condition showing no improvement.

During Diwali, the concentration of toxic particles in the air has been found to increase dramatically to 70% higher the worst levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was once regarded as the globally most contaminated city.

Diverse Pollution Factors

The problem in Delhi is resulting from a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, rubbish burning and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, farmers regularly set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, creating toxic smog that becomes contained over the city as cooler air sets in.

Medical and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants living in the capital region is substantial, according to numerous research.

The contaminated air causes high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to cancer.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for 10,000 premature deaths each year in the city.
