European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
