Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Context for Proprietor Fines
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
