Catherine's Traditional Christmas Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Charity Helpers
Her Royal Highness has organised her customary Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.
The 1,600 guests will hear a selection of carols, music and readings from actors such as award-winning actors.
Focusing on Love and Generosity
The central message of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.
In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.
"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the concert.
A Gradual Return
The princess has been making her own gradual return to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".
Musical Talent and Access
Guests arriving at the Abbey will be entertained by talented youth performers supported by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for musical tuition.
An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been supported by the charity, with awards contributing to musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at the concert.
"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now studying at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.
A Family Affair
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many important people," she said.
Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, recipient of a young hero award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for local food charities.
Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts
The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.
Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."
This annual carol service will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
